路標上寫著No standing，是指不能站在底下嗎？英文什麼意思？

Maggie到紐約出差，和外國朋友走在路上，一路上都看到告示牌上寫著“No standing”，她覺得很奇怪，交通規則居然還有規定不准站在哪裡的，就問朋友，為什麼“No standing”。

原來，stand還真不是「站」的意思。

1. No standing.

（Ｘ）請勿站在這裡。
（Ｏ）禁止停車。

“No standing.” 裡的stand在這裡的意思，與其說是站，更接近「停靠」。Stand當「停靠」的用法，來看例句：

• The train now standing at platform 8 is the 15:17 for Cardiff.
  現在停靠在八號月台的是15點17分開往Cardiff的火車。

No standing是「禁止把車停靠於此」。這和no parking有何不同呢？

在美國，禁止停車按嚴格程度可分三種：

• No parking.
• No standing.
• No stopping.

“No parking!” 的parking大家應該很熟，不可停車。這個標示表示，雖然不能停車，但臨時停一下還是允許的，例如司機還在車上，必要時，可隨時移動車子。

“No standing!”稍嚴格一點，就算司機還在車上也不行，只可短暫讓人上下車，馬上得開走。

“No stopping!”最嚴格，無論如何都不能停。

在交通十分擁擠的大城市，這三種標示都算常見。

2. Let me stand you a drink.

（Ｘ）我們站著喝杯飲料吧！
（Ｏ）讓我請你喝杯飲料吧！

Stand當動詞，有「招待、請客」的意思， "Stand someone a drink" 是口語表達，意思是請某人喝一杯酒或者付酒錢，用來表示善意或者熱情款待。

• I left my wallet at home, so could you stand me my lunch?
  我錢包放在家裡，午餐你能請我嗎?
• I really appreciated your help today. How about I stand you dinner after work?

3. Don’t worry. I can stand the heat.
